Joe Gehring is joining the Metro Catholic community as the school’s new principal this fall. The John Carroll grad and Gesu parishioner brings a wealth of educational experience to his work at Metro. Joe also brings zeal for all that makes Metro special, and he shared that enthusiasm during remarks after Sunday Mass at St. Stephen, the parish next door to the school.

I am deeply honored to be the Principal of Metro Catholic School. All of us here, principal, teachers, staff, students, families, alumni, and parishioners of St. Stephen, are called to be shepherds of the rich history of Metro Catholic and to make sure its legacy lives on for many years to come so that as many students as possible can benefit from a great, faith fillers education.

Our treasure is not in bricks or budgets, but in our students: their hearts, their potential, and their faith. Our mission this year is simple and sacred: nurture that treasure.  Here is how we will do that:

  1. First, we will restore and deepen our Catholic identity, through vibrant prayer, meaningful integration of Catholic values and the values of the Sisters of Notre Dame, sharing the faith through our actions and in religion class, and building a stronger connection with our St. Stephen family.

  2. Next, we will support our teachers, equipping them with the resources, inspiration, and collaboration they need to unlock each child’s unique potential.

  3. Third, we will cultivate student growth: academic, social, & spiritual, so they soar not just in school, but into high school, into their vocations, and into lives that strengthen our community and make all of us proud.

  4. And finally, we are seeking to bridge church and school, enriching both through shared events, service, and daily witness, so all of us: students, families, staff – feel united in faith and purpose. When we adults model and share what our own faith means to us, our children benefit.

  5. Above all, we stand ready. Like the servants in the Gospel, we keep our “lamps burning,” vigilant and hopeful, prepared for the great things God is calling us to do.

To our students: you are our inspiration. You are the reason every hall, every classroom, every heart pulses with purpose. We are here to lift you, to guide you, and to cheer you on.

To our teachers: thank you for your dedication. You are the stewards of heart and mind.  The shepherds of the beautiful history and traditions of Metro Catholic. We will journey with you—and provide the tools and support to make your mission thrive.

To Fr. Caroli and St. Stephen Parish: thank you for welcoming me and our school with open arms. Together, we will model faith in action, forming young people grounded in Christ and community.

May God bless us all with courage, faith, hope, and unity as we step into this school year.
