It All Adds Up

When Bob Lyons came to the Partnership just to meet Jill Kafka and see what we were up to, he never thought within the week he would be in the South Bronx with Sr. Patrice at Immaculate Conception School talking about teaching a course on Personal Finance to a group of 6th and 7th graders.  But that’s exactly what happened.    Already a volunteer at two other Catholic schools – one in Bridgeport and another in the Bronx – Bob explained he was really looking for a place to make his home.  After successfully creating, building and selling two firms he knew he had a lot more to give and he knew exactly what he wanted to do.  With a long career in finance and the mathematical chops to prove it, Bob wanted to make finance and specifically math interesting to kids.  By the time the school year ended Bob had tutored a group of 15, 6th and 7th grade students at ICS who needed a little extra help to crack the code for their New York State Math tests.   Never one to be shy, Principal Patrice has already signed up Bob for the new school year as a math tutor for 6th, 7th and 8th graders three days a week while also teaching his Personal Finance course as an after-school option. You see it really did add up — a smart volunteer plus a great school and some terrific kids.

If this adds up for you, and you would like to lend a hand after school or during, let us know. We welcome volunteers and mentors.  Send an email to info@www.pnyc.local.com or call us at 646-794-3349.  We would love to hear from you.
